The Dairy Herd

The 100-head dairy herd came with us from Wiltshire and was soon increased to over 200-head.

The Milk Quota debacle of 1984, dreamed up by MAFF and the EEC, put many dairy farmers out of business sooner or later.

The last dairy cows left Greys Green Farm in 1991.

Coming in to milk

The cow at front left, Blind Alma, was born totally blind but used her other senses to compensate. She came with us from Wiltshire and, sadly, died of shock when a hot air balloon decided to fly low over the herd.

The bantams

The previous owner of Greys Green Farm failed to catch all his bantams when he left, so the residue stayed here and multiplied happily for many years until the commercial tenants came along and found the cockerels' incessant crowing oddly irritating.
